The Gloucestershire Naturalists' Society (GNS) was formed in 1948 with the aim of promoting an interest in the varied wildlife of the county of Gloucestershire, U.K. At the same time, it assumed the task of recording the county's flora and fauna. To assist in this, the GNS appoints and supports county recorders for all aspects of wildlife - birds, mammals, insects and wildflowers for example.
During the year, the GNS holds a number of field meetings, aimed at covering a variety of natural history sites throughout the county. These meetings give members an opportunity to spend time with an experienced naturalist, looking at one or more aspects of the county's flora and fauna.
Members are encouraged to report their findings to the county recorders to ensure that we continue to hold important data about the county's natural history.
The GNS also holds regular illustrated talks by experienced naturalists, many of which are free to members. Guests are welcome to attend any talks but there will be a nominal entrance charge. For a list of illustrated talks coming up in the near future see our list of Diary Dates.
Members of the Society receive the quarterly newsletter, containing articles on wildlife matters as well as news about the Society and its events; a free copy of the Gloucestershire Bird Report each year and free copies of The Gloucestershire Naturalist which contains more scientific articles on Gloucestershire wildlife.
GNS Members also have free access to the Society's extensive library of several thousand volumes, which range from scholarly works and research papers to books of more general interest and, of course, field guides! Most of these books can be freely borrowed by members of the Society on production of their membership card.
Ordinary membership of the Society costs just £8.00 per annum. In addition, we are able to offer family membership for additional members at the same address as the ordinary member at a reduced rate of £2.00 per person.
